Shorts

There's often a desire to make some of my work more readily available. There's also the ongoing desire to try out new formats and new ideas. Using the relative cheapness of Amazon's printing, it has become possible for me to make short books in a nice size available at a sensible price.

So, here is a page dedicated to shorts - full-colour, square-format photo books that concentrate on a single subject and have fewer than 100 pages. They are the perfect title for someone who wants to see what I do without spending a fortune on a large-format coffee-table volume.

The Painted Wolf

The Painted Wolf

The Painted Wolf or African Wild Dog has always held a special fascination for me and I've tried to share a little of the pleasure I obtain from seeing these rare and endangered creatures in this small volume.

I've been lucky enough to see painted wolves several times on numerous trips to Africa and have had wonderful and engaging encounters with them across the continent.

elusive: Leopards in Africa

elusive: Leopards in Africa

Elusive, adjective: hard to find, catch or achieve.

Few large mammals can be described so succinctly, but leopards are, despite their relatively large numbers, incredibly difficult to see and even harder to photograph.

In nine trips to Africa, a total of more than 40 weeks on the ground, I have seen them only a scant dozen times and four of those sightings were on a single day. They remain, however, a true highlight whenever they are sighted and an encounter can be truly rewarding.

Pride: Lions

Pride: Lions

To many safari-goers, the Lion is their primary target. I’ve heard countless travellers for whom seeing a lion in the wild is the be-all and end-all of a safari trip.

In the beginning, I may well have been the same. I didn’t see a lion on my first short trip to Kenya, but on subsequent visits I have seen many, in many different locations across the sub-Saharan continent.

I’m going to confess that, in general, I find them less appealing than leopards, cheetahs or wild dogs, but they still offer some spectacular photographic opportunities and once in a while you get to see them doing something really interesting.
